Elafonissos and Voidokilia, Greece

Greece is famous not just for its history and architecture: its beaches are equally popular. The new AirPano tour focuses on two locations in the Peloponnese area: Elafonissos Island and Voidokilia beach in the Messinia region.

Elafonissos is located off the southeastern tip of the Peloponnese. Its area is about 19 square kilometers (7.3 sq. mi.) and the coastline is 30 kilometers (18.6 mi.) long. There are no more than 750 permanent residents here, but during the summer season it is visited by more than 3,000 tourists a day!

Elafonissos

During the Peloponnesian War, this area was a battlefield between the Athenians and the Spartans, and at that time the island was connected to the mainland by an isthmus. Today it is a peaceful, idyllic resort where the main business of the residents is tourism and fishing.

Some people refer to Elafonissos as the "Caribbean of Greece" due to its popularity combined with its picturesque bays, turquoise waters and bright golden sands. The most famous beaches are Sarakiniko, Fragos (Simos) and Panagias Nissia. There are several archaeological sites preserved on the island itself and in the surrounding waters, such as Pavlopetri: the oldest submerged city, which is about 5,000 years old. The coastline gives way to small hills where charming chapels are hidden in cedar thickets.

Another Greek paradise is Voidokilia beach, which is especially fascinating when seen from above: it is shaped like the Greek letter Omega (Ω), framed by a strip of dunes.

Part of Voidokilia Bay is the Gialova Lagoon, home to over 200 species of birds. The place is designated as a "Site of Outstanding Natural Beauty" and is part of the Natura 2000 protected area.

Voidokilia

Many historical monuments, such as the cave of King Nestor, the ruins of the Frankish Old Navarino Fortress and other landmarks, attract tourists. But there are just as many beach lovers: the azure sea, the finest sand, the rich underwater world and the panoramic views will not leave anyone indifferent!

We hope you enjoyed your virtual trip to this authentic part of Greece.
